Prior to 1925 when the BBC commenced broadcasting weather forecasts, numerous companies and individuals applied themselves to designing better and more accurate means of forecasting the weather, the most well-known being products from Negretti & Zambra, including the Weather Watch, Weather Foreteller, and various brass and celluloid forecasters etc. This enables the pointer to be mapped precisely to the setting point and later observations then interpreted. The entire movement rotates within the case, caused by sliding the screw headed adjuster. Generally worn, the bezel with some distortion, the dial clean and crisp, the movement working well with a more than acceptable degree of error.Ĭomments: A scarce early precursor to Short & Mason’s Stormoguide weather forecaster, patented in the early 1930s. Extension post and suspension ring.Ĭondition: Fully serviced, conserved, and calibrated under laboratory conditions. The lower case with semi-circular slot, sliding screw headed adjuster, arrow set true pressure indicator, the verso with port for calibration screw. Enclosed within a high copper content brass drum form case with flared mouth. All relevant design files (hardware design, firmware) can be found here.Weather Indicator having 4¾” printed alloy dial marked “Falling” or “Rising” with associated weather prognostications, barometric scale calibrated in inches of mercury with a range from 27½” to 31½”, top centre marked “Setting Point,” the lower part annotated “Hutchinson’s Testing Apparatus Ltd, 11, Tothill Street, Westminster, S.W.” Further instructions printed at bottom along with “Patent No 8519-11.” Blued steel pointer, all set beneath a bevelled glass.Ģ.5” capsule driven movement tensioned on a C spring, raised on a cut steel chassis. I also wrote a simple python application which allowed me to set the various light patterns for each weather situation - generating the appropriate c arrays for light patterns automatically. Using the forecast it selects the light pattern associated with the forecast weather for the next few hours and displays it. Using that, it then connects to the weather database and pulls the weather forecast for the region inside which it is located. It the accesses a time server and a server with geo-location information.

GLASS WEATHER INDICATOR SOFTWARE

The software for the Wether Indicator Cube was designed as follows: after all peripheral devices of the STM32L are intialized, the software connects to any open Wi-Fi access point. to re position your outside sensor away from the window so it is not in line of site. The PCB and electronics are then fitted into a 7 x 7 cm cube of sanded acrylic glass. Precise, real-time backyard weather with wireless technology. It also monitors the 1000 mAh Lithium Ion battery, which can be charged via a USB port. The microcontroller communicates with the various internet resources by using the Wi-Fi module and in turn drives the RGB LED via preprogrammed color patterns.

The hardware, which was designed in Altium Designer, consists of an STM32L microcontroller coupled with a RN-131 Wi-Fi module. This is done by taking advantage of various web sources to determine the current time, location and the weather forecast for the location. The function of the WI Cube is to display the short-term weather as a changin color pattern, combining practicality and aestetic functionality in a single, minimalistic device.

The WI Cube consists of a circuit board with a Wi-Fi module and an RGB LED diode, powered by a LiIon battery. As part of a project in microcontroller systems, I built a Weather Indicator Cube.
